I said farewell to eight Daily Mail trainees sub-editors today after four busy and intense weeks. They spent most of this week developing their InDesign and Photoshop skills and laying out Mail pages with designer Mike Brough. Last night we had drinks with senior staff at the Greyhound. We finished the week as usual with the newsquiz, 25 questions about the week. This week’s winner was Oliver Jervis with 21 ahead of Amelia Perry on 17. Oliver was the top scorer over the four weeks and won a bottle of champagne. The trainees now head off to placements at the Mail in Glasgow, Metro, the i newspaper, the Press Association and the Mail subs room. They are a bright and likeable bunch who will undoubtedly do well. I wish them all the best of luck. The Daily Mail trainee subs had another busy week in Kensington. They spent Monday doing long-form editing with Fiona Webster, assistant night editor Lottie Young set them a subbing exercise and they enjoyed cookies and great advice from executive chief-sub Rich Hall. They wrote personality profiles and headlines, copytasted for the next day’s paper, covered a breaking story in real time and came up with ideas for new publications and features. This afternoon showbiz editor Katie Hind took a break from covering Liam Payne to talk about her role. Amelia Perry won a scratchcard for the most accurate copytasting decisions. The Daily Mail trainee subs have just finished their second week in Kensington. They edited a breaking story, took copy from PA and turned it into Mail style, wrote headlines, captions and read proofs. The best picture headline of the week went to Myriam Page who won a scratch card.
