I said goodbye to eight young journalists at the Mail this week. They had sessions with senior reporter Mark Duell, foreign correspondent Chris Pleasance, showbiz correspondent Dolly Busby and features editor Siofra Brennan. Lead social creative Nick Bolwell and head of news video Jamie McConkey gave them feedback on their video ideas. On Wednesday the trainees had a legal day with global head of compliance Paul Hutchinson and the lawyers. They covered a breaking news story, created banners, wrote personality profiles and prepared newslists for their placements. There are plenty more stories in the pipeline. Last night some of them attended Hugh Cudlipp lecture, by The Sun editor Victoria Newton and on Wednesday they enjoyed drinks with senior staff in the Greyhound. We finished the course, as always, with the newsquiz. The top scorer this week was Evie Selby with 21. Evie was also the top scorer over the three-week course and collected a bottle of champagne. Tara Russell scored 19, Emily Driver 18, Lotte Micklethwaite 17 and Tom Layton 16. The trainees now head off to their placements at the Mail in Dublin, Glasgow and London. They are a bright and likeable bunch who will undoubtedly do well. I wish them all the best of luck.

Trainees Evie and Lotte win the newsquiz

The Daily Mail trainees had another full-on week in Kensington. They pitched news stories to global editor Dan Sanderson and travel ideas to deputy travel editor Ben Parker. They had sessions with publisher and CEO Danny Groom, global editorial director Ben Bailey, deputy head of showbiz Rebecca Davison, chief reporter Sam Greenhill, UK editorial director Amanda Williams and innovation editor Cameron Roy. Nathan Aspell and Nick Bolwell from the social media team set them a task to be completed over the weekend, as did head of news video Jamie McConkey. Associate managing editor and safety officer Tara Eude and consultant Clara Pappalettera covered well-being and safety.
Former trainees Bella Machin, Josh Haining, Joe Rossiter, Olivia Kemp, Jamie Boys, William Hallowell and Freya Barnes talked about their journey.
During the week the trainees wrote stories, intros, captions and headlines. Emily Driver won a scratchcard for the best news headline of the week and Will Gove for the best picture headline.
