Alastair wins the newsquiz champagne

I enjoyed my final week in London with the five Daily Mail trainees from New York. They pitched stories to travel editor Ted Thornhill and Femail deputy editor Steph LinningTrainee Shannon Thaler, inspired by Wimbledon, tracked down the ten most spectacular tennis courts in the world. You can read her story here. 

Other stories will be published soon. The trainees had talks from editor Danny Groom, deputy editor Lucy Cockcroft, assistant editor Andy Milne and head of social media Chris Lawrence. During the week, the trainees covered a breaking news story in real time, wrote a personality profile for publication and prepared a newslist for their return to the newsroom. 

Farewell drinks at the Devonshire Arms in Kensington

Last night we had farewell drinks at the Devonshire Arms. For the next two weeks they will be learning the content system and writing more stories with Nick Enoch. They then have a week in the Mail’s London newsroom before returning to New York as reporters. They are a very bright, talented and likeable bunch and I wish them well as they start their careers. Andrea and Alastair win the US newsquiz

The DailyMail.com trainees from America finished their isolation last weekend and were allowed into the Kensington offices from Monday. They pitched news stories  to Amy Maas on the New York newsdesk and came up with video ideas for assistant video editor Talya Varga. They had sessions with travel editor Ted Thornhill and Femail deputy editor Steph Linning and next week will pitch ideas for both sections. They also had a legal day with the Mail’s lawyers and talks from acting showbiz editor Rebecca Davison, Natalie Johnson from the SEO team, Mail Plus news-editor Rod Ardehali and met Nick Enoch, who will be training them in the content system. They wrote a breaking story, created headlines and captions on pictures and developed stories from the wires. Tommy Taylor and Alastair Talbot won the awards for best picture headlines of the week.
