Alastair wins the newsquiz champagne

I enjoyed my final week in London with the five Daily Mail trainees from New York. They pitched stories to travel editor Ted Thornhill and Femail deputy editor Steph LinningTrainee Shannon Thaler, inspired by Wimbledon, tracked down the ten most spectacular tennis courts in the world. You can read her story here.

Other stories will be published soon. The trainees had talks from editor Danny Groom, deputy editor Lucy Cockcroft, assistant editor Andy Milne and head of social media Chris Lawrence. During the week, the trainees covered a breaking news story in real time, wrote a personality profile for publication and prepared a newslist for their return to the newsroom.

Farewell drinks at the Devonshire Arms in Kensington

Last night we had farewell drinks at the Devonshire Arms. For the next two weeks they will be learning the content system and writing more stories with Nick Enoch. They then have a week in the Mail’s London newsroom before returning to New York as reporters. They are a very bright, talented and likeable bunch and I wish them well as they start their careers. Stars of the future. We finished as always with the newsquiz. The top scorer with an impressive 21 out of 25 was Alastair Talbot. Alastair was also top scorer over the course so collected the champagne. Well played. Here is this week's American newsquiz. Give it a go and let me know how you get on. If you are looking for the usual UK newsquiz, it's here.
