I have just finished my first week with five bright Daily Mail trainees in New York. They had sessions with executive editor Barclay Crawford, managing editor Richard Ellis and assistant managing editor Niccole Lewis. Acting head of news Jimmy McCloskey, Femail editor Raven Saunt and health editor Alexa Lardieri all told them how their departments work and the type of stories they are interested in. The trainees will be pitching ideas to them next week. Deputy picture editor Emanuel Ramirez explained how the desk operates, HR business partner Kimberly Ratterman went through the workplace benefits and Mail+ assistant editor Jac Fuller talked through editing and interviewing. The trainees wrote news stories, ledes, headlines and animal stories. Jack Toledo was published on the site with a story he brought in about a manatee risking its life in Cape Cod. Read it here.
