The Daily Mail subbing trainees had an intense final week of training in Kensington. The two sports subs were on the sportsdesk for much of the week, creating spreads and covering games. The news subs worked on a breaking story, created visuals for new sections and went through an editing exercise with senior subs Mike Hawkins and Ben Jackson.

There were sessions by chief sub Alex Richman and features chief sub Andrea Jones. The trainees now head off to newsrooms in London and Glasgow for their placements. They are a bright and likeable group and I wish them well.

We finished the course, as usual, with the newsquiz. This week's winner was Becca McCauley with a score of 17, just ahead of Sian Bahia on 16.5. It meant Becca overtook quiz pacesetter Lewis Steele to collect the Champagne for the top score over the four weeks. Well done to her. 

Last week’s top online newsquiz score was an unbeatable 23 by Liz Gerard, ahead of Janet Boyle on 20, the same as Becca scored. Toby Brown clocked up 18 and Gavin Devine 17. The best team score was 17.5 by Bruce and Sarah Hayward followed by the Penman Collective and the Roberts Family on 17.

Becca wins this week's newsquiz

The trainees with some of the pages they created this week

The Daily Mail's trainee sub-editors and sports journalists had a change of pace this week. They spent three days developing their InDesign, Photoshop and layout skills with Mike Brough. And yesterday and today the sports journalists worked on the sports desk. Isaan Khan went to the Tottenham Hotspur press conference and his article was published online. You can read it here. 

Lewis Steele was at Manuel Pellegrini's press conference today ahead of West Ham's game against Manchester United on Sunday. The sub-editors spent the last two days doing features with Fiona Webster. The Daily Mail trainees had another busy week in Kensington. They had sessions with consultant editor Andrew Pierce, weekend editor Amy Marley and editor emeritus Peter Wright, who went through Ipso and the editor's code. On Wednesday they had a day with the lawyers. Associate night editor Chris Dean and Katherine Cowles, from last year's course, gave talks to the subbing trainees. Trainee Kathryn Batte spent time on the sports desk and her story on England's record at St Mary's, before Tuesday's game against Kosovo, was published. You can read it here. 

As always we finished the week with the newsquiz. The joint top scorers this week are Kumail Jaffer and Lewis Steele who both scored 17.5. The highest scoring reporter over the two weeks, though, was Aloysius Atkinson who won the Champagne. Well done to him.
The reporters now head off to their placements in Dublin, Glasgow, Liverpool and Birmingham. I wish them well and look forward to their success stories. The subs have another two weeks of training in London.

Aloysius wins newsquiz with 20 points

The 15 Daily Mail editorial trainees - news reporters, sports journalists and sub-editors - had a busy first week in Derry Street. They enjoyed sessions with executive editor Ben Taylor, managing editor Alex Bannister, investigative reporter Sian Boyle and former trainees Eleanor Sharples and Dora Allday. The reporters pitched stories to chief reporter Sam Greenhill and the sports journalists to consultant sports editor Jim Mansell. The subs had sessions with senior sub David Felstein.
