Sara wins the US newsquiz

I have just finished an enjoyable first week with five DailyMail.com trainees in New York. They covered a lot of ground, met some key people and wrote stories in style. They had sessions with Jimmy McCloskey from the newsdesk and head of health and science Connor Boyd. They will be pitching three stories each to them next week. They also had talks from executive editor Barclay Crawford, the political team of Wills Robinson and Kelly Laco, deputy associate picture editor Emanuel Ramirez and former trainees Germania Rodriguez, Emma Richter and Martha Williams. The managing editor’s team of Niccole Lewis and Hugh Burgdorf went through the rotas and gave other practical tips and Kim Ratterman told them about the range of benefits on offer. Sonya Gugliara was the first trainee on the course to be published. She brought in the story of a 53-year-old father who could barely get out of bed but now walks five hours a day thanks to a pioneering headset. It was the banner on the health page and you can read it here

There will be many more stories to come.
Lauren Acton-Taylor won a scratch card for the best intro/lede of the week and Kelly Garino for the best headlines. As usual we finished with the newsquiz … 25 questions about the week. Sara McGiff was the highest scorer with 15.5, narrowly ahead of Sam Rutt who scored 15. Below are the 25 questions. Why not give it a go and see if you can beat Sara's score.
