Farewell to the Daily Mail Australia trainees

I said goodbye to the Daily Mail trainees in Sydney on Friday. They had an intense final few days getting stories published, covering a breaking news story in real time and drawing up a newslist for their start in the newsroom on Monday. They enjoyed sessions with senior journalist Stephen Gibbs, executive editor Lachlan Heywood, social media editor Cameron Carpenter and former trainees Matilda Rudd and Holly Hales. The trainees also had another five stories published on the Daily Mail Australia site - bringing their total during the course to 11.

On Wednesday evening the trainees joined the senior staff for drinks at the All Hands Brewing House on Darling Harbour. A good night was had by all. I have really enjoyed my four weeks with the trainees. They are a bright and likeable bunch. I wish them well in their careers and will watch their successes with interest.

Wade wins the Aussie newsquiz

The Daily Mail trainees in Sydney have had another good week. They pitched news stories to the newsdesk, Femail and the travel editor. Well done to Tom Place for getting this story published on Femail.

I look forward to their other stories being published soon. They had sessions with Femail editor Laura House, video editor Ian Perry and former trainee Josh Hanrahan. Thursday was a legal day with MD Peter Holder and Kimberley Brunt from the managing editor’s office who dealt with the Australian Press Council and the consequences of making mistakes. Lawyer Paul Svilans then went through defamation and contempt. Trainee Shivé Prema won the best picture headline and shared the best video headline award with Wade Sellers. Mary and Tom win the Aussie newsquiz

The Daily Mail trainees in Sydney had a good week with six stories published to add to the two by Shivé Prema last Saturday. Wade Sellers got the banner for his story about Australian tattoos. Read it here.

Mary Mrad was published twice with stories about how Muslims celebrated Australia Day and a look at surprising Aussie inventions.

Thomas Duff wrote a story on the social media reaction to Prime Minister Scott Morrison's rule on formal dress at Australia Day ceremonies.
