Darren Powell - talented and passionate designer

The Gloucester Citizen has paid a fitting tribute to its design editor and chief sub Darren Powell today ... describing him as the life and soul of the newsroom. The paper carried a front page picture and a double page spread on Pages 4 and 5 charting Darren's life and career. The paper also re-published some of his most creative front pages. The online tribute is here. Darren died last week (Aug 13), on his 42nd birthday, after suffering a brain haemorrhage in July. He had been at The Citizen for 14 years and made a huge impact on the paper's design. He won many awards during his career and his death leaves a big hole in The Citizen newsroom. When I last saw him he was enthusiastically redrawing a front page to a tight deadline after a late news picture had dropped. It is how I will always remember him.
