Chris and Izzy lead in newquiz battle

The MailOnline trainees have had a busy second week in Kensington. They pitched stories to head of exclusives Dan Sanderson and sports editor Olly Todd. One story by trainee Chay Quinn, on Manchester aiming to be only the third city to win football’s European double, has been published already. Read it here

There are more stories in the pipeline. The trainees also had sessions with deputy Femail editor Steph Linning, deputy head of video Olivia Bateman, assistant managing editor Paul Hutchinson, travel editor Ted Thornhill and senior reporter Mark Duell. One of last year’s trainees Kate Dennett popped in to offer some useful practical tips. As usual we did the newsquiz. This week’s winner was Chris Matthews on 19.5 narrowly ahead of Izzy Baldwin on 19.

Opportunity for young journalists at the i

Here is a fantastic opportunity for budding young journalists. Britain’s youngest national newspaper and website, the i, has launched an apprentice scheme aimed at school and college-leavers and people who may traditionally face barriers to a media career.
Each successful apprentice will complete four weeks of intensive training with the Press Association in London, followed by a 13-week programme of training from Monday to Thursday, with Fridays spent in i’s newsroom.

Trainees will work towards their Junior Journalism Apprenticeship, made up of the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism and a final assessment project. Each apprentice will receive a salary for the two-year programme and their tuition will be full funded. Editor Oly Duff and colleagues explain the scheme in a video hereIf you have A-levels and/or a B-Tec level 3 (or will have by the summer), a passion for journalism and can start in London in August, get your application in here.

Designs on the Memorial Cup ...

I have been having fun over the last few weeks putting together the programme for a charity football match being played at Selhurst Park next Saturday (May 29). It is the Mark Milsome Memorial Cup between the film crews who are working on Indiana Jones and a TV series with the working title Essex. Mark was killed while filming a car stunt in Ghana in November 2017. The Mark Milsome Foundation was set up in his memory and it helps support young people who do not have the contacts or education to a break into the film and TV industry. The foundation also offers health and safety courses. The first memorial cup game was held in 2019. This year it is being held at the Crystal Palace ground on Saturday May 29, kick off 2pm.
I got involved, along with my youngest son Thom, because eldest son Jack is part of the Indiana Jones crew. With help from Andy Woodcock, Harry Bowers and my colleague Mike Brough we wrote, designed and printed the 28-page match programme which is full of information about Mark, profiles and pictures of all the players, quizzes and puzzles and it doubles up as a raffle ticket.
It is a really good cause so if anyone fancies coming to the game you can buy tickets, at £10 each, here. We have access to the FanZone after the game - for food, beers and the Champions League Final if you fancy it. Look forward to seeing you there (and in the bar afterwards).

The newsquiz: Can you beat Chris's score?

I enjoyed a welcome return to the coalface in Kensington this week to work with seven MailOnline trainees. They had a good first week with sessions by editor Danny Groom, assistant managing editor Natalie Glanville, chief foreign reporter Chris Pleasance and former trainee Georgia Simcox. We covered style, intros, headlines and Natalie Johnson gave them guidance on SEO. The winners of the best intro of the week were Elmira Tanatarova and Chris Matthews and the winner of the best headline was also Chris. Head of exclusives Dan Sanderson spoke to them about the types of stories MailOnline is interested in and where to find them. They will each be pitching three story ideas to him next week.
