Trainee Martha wins the quiz champagne

I said farewell to the DailyMail.com trainees in New York yesterday. They had a good final week with sessions by head of audience Rory Benson and SEO editor Katrina Schollenberger. They also presented story ideas to associate editor Charlie Lankston, news-editor James Nye and had one-to-ones with editor-in-chief Gerard Greaves. During the week they covered a live breaking story in real time, wrote personality profiles and prepared a newslist of story ideas for their return to the newsroom. Martha Williams was published for the third time during the course ... a grim story about a woman finding a dead frog in her salad. You can read it here


They have written more stories which will hopefully be published soon. Next week they are learning Content Creator with Nick Enoch. On Thursday they had drinks with some of the senior staff at the Copper Still. Martha gets the splash and wins newsquiz

The DailyMail.com trainees had another lively week in the New York office. They enjoyed sessions with editor-in-chief Gerard Greaves, editor Louise Thomas, associate editor Charlie Lankston and news-editor James Nye. Head of video Alex Ringsell and deputy associate picture editor Emanuel Rameriz explained how the trainees will work with their departments. Former trainees Karen Ruiz, Kayla Brantley, Wills Robinson and Jen Smith talked through the journey from starting the scheme to being a senior journalist. On Thursday the trainees pitched stories to health and science editor Connor Boyd … watch this space. They also went on to the wire, selected a story and developed it in Mail style, created a banner from badly-written copy, wrote headlines, captions, factboxes and studied the website in detail. Martha Williams and Mackenzie Tatananni won scratchcards for writing the best headlines. Martha and Emma Richter both got their second bylines of the course. Martha’s was an exclusive about a 17-year-old who had to bite through her umbilical cord as she gave birth alone. It became the splash. You can read it here.

Mackenzie wins the US newsquiz

I have just finished an enjoyable first week with six DailyMail.com trainees in New York. They covered a lot of ground, wrote stories in style and had sessions from managing editors Danielle Ray, Nicole Lewis and Caitlin Mckenzie. They also had a talk from head of health and science Connor Boyd and will be pitching stories to him next week. Emma Richter got off to an impressive start and was published on the site the day before the course actually started. You can read her story, on a woman whose cat was banned from Bali, here. 


And Martha Williams decided not to wait until next week to pitch her health story to Connor as it was time-sensitive. She wrote a tale about the first restaurant in America to serve man-made chicken which gained a good show on today's home page. Read it here.
